Phenylbutazone should not be used in combination with vitamin K antagonists, or in horses with known kidney or liver problems.
Adverse side effects from overdose or prolonged use include gastro intestinal ulcers, kidney damage, oral lesions and internal haemorrhage (particularly in young, unwell or stressed horses).
Overdoses of phenylbutazone can cause renal failure, liver injury, bone marrow suppression and gastric ulceration or perforation. Early signs of toxicity include loss of appetite and depression.Contact your vet at the first display of these signs.
Indications of NSAID toxicity include difficulty in food consumption due to oral ulceration and signs of pain when swallowing.
Prolonged treatment with AbButazone can increase the prevalence of equine ulcers. A preventative treatment regime with Gastric Ulcer treatment proucts - AbPrazole, AbPrazole Plus or AbSucralfate may be beneficial.
