AbButazone alleviates inflammation and pain associated with musculoskeletal disorders in adult horses. Phenylbutazone (the active ingredient in AbButazone), is a non-steroidal, analgesic agent with anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) and antipyretic activity.

  • Each 2.2g sachet of film-coated granules contains 1g phenylbutazone BP.
  • Treatment dosage of 8.8mg/kg (4mg/lb) of horse's bodyweight, reducing to 4.4mg/kg (2mg/lb).


  • Top dress dry granules onto feed. A small amount of corn syrup or molasses can be added to the feed mix.
  • Add to apple sauce and spread onto a treat such as an apple or carrot.
Safety and Storage


  • Do not use on horses with known kidney or liver problems.
  • Treatment should not exceed 5 consecutive days.
  • Do not treat horses intended for human consumption.
  • Keep out of reach of children.
  • Use cautiously in pregnant or nursing mares.
  • Treatment with AbButazone may mask the severity or worsening of
  • symptoms of other injuries or illnesses.
  • Veterinary use only.


Phenylbutazone should not be used in combination with vitamin K antagonists, or in horses with known kidney or liver problems.

Side Effects

Adverse side effects from overdose or prolonged use include gastro intestinal ulcers, kidney damage, oral lesions and internal haemorrhage (particularly in young, unwell or stressed horses).


Overdoses of phenylbutazone can cause renal failure, liver injury, bone marrow suppression and gastric ulceration or perforation. Early signs of toxicity include loss of appetite and depression.Contact your vet at the first display of these signs.


Indications of NSAID toxicity include difficulty in food consumption due to oral ulceration and signs of pain when swallowing.  


  • Store in a cool dry atmosphere away from extreme heat.
  • Store/Transport at and 20º to 30ºC ( 68º to 86ºF)

Prolonged treatment with AbButazone can increase the prevalence of equine ulcers. A preventative treatment regime with Gastric Ulcer treatment  proucts - AbPrazole, AbPrazole Plus or AbSucralfate may be beneficial.
